  • The entry citizens of India must have felt extremely elated, excited, and enthusiastic when wrestler Vinesh Phogat won three back-to-back stunning victories to storm into the semi-finals in the Paris Olympics. In the opening bout, Vinesh created the biggest upset by defeating the reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan as well. This victory over the experienced wrestler ensured that Indian sports lovers went crazy with the prospect of at least a silver medal assured, if not the ultimate gold itself. In storming the semi-finals, Vinesh also became the first women wrestler from India to achieve this significant feat. The hopes of the country, starved of sustained sporting glory, soared heavenwards as a medal irrespective of the color was confirmed.

  • As you are aware, Vinesh Phogat was at the forefront during last year’s agitation initiated by the renowned wrestlers against the then Wrestling Federation of India chief over sexual harassment allegations. The visuals of Vinesh pitching a tent at Jantan Mantar protesting action against the WFI chief left a lasting impression on the whole country. Mind you, she was fighting against the perceived mishandling of the situation by the authorities as well as safeguarding the future young athletes’ interests. She is a born fighter is a well-established fact by now. After the agitation, the preparations for the Paris Olympics commenced in the right earnest for Vinesh aiming to bring laurels to the country. She did leave no stone unturned in preparing for the event.
  • Vinesh storming into the finals was a great achievement for the wrestler who fought all odds from giving up her preferred 53kg category to 50kg for the quadrennial Olympic competition. The way she was wrestling suggested a steely determination to go the whole distance. Unfortunately, what transpired on the day of the finals in the form of Vinesh’s disqualification not only came as a big devastating shocker to the wrestler herself, but the entire country almost went into mourning in what could have been a sure shot attempt at winning the gold medal. The reason cited by the organizing authorities was that Vinesh was found 100gms more than the desired 50kg weight to qualify to fight in the finals. This bit of news must have shattered anybody, let alone Vinesh.

  • Of course, it is understood as reported in the newspapers that the Indian contingent did everything under its control right through the night before the event to reduce the excess weight to allow Vinesh to compete. However, despite efforts by the concerned, Vinesh was found 100 gms more on the morning of the fight. The wrestler must have felt despondent, and the countrymen would have wondered why a mere 100 grams of excess weight should deny Vinesh from fighting in the finals. But rules are meant to be followed, you see. Despite appeals and requests, Vinesh’s request to allow participation was not considered. Sadly, Vinesh has announced retirement from the sport itself. The whole country understands her pain. Vinesh, you are a winner. We are proud of you!
