India is a birthplace of many divine gods and goddesses. The Hinduism culture is followed by majority of people in India. Although Hinduism is known to be open and support individuality of both sex, recently instances of sex discrimination were heard at Hindu Worship places. One of such instances occured at the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra, when the ideologies crossed path with sex preference.
It all started when a group of women activist forcefully tried to enter the Shani Mandir premises in a bid to offer worship on the core shrine area where the entry of woman are prohibited. The facts about the recent spat:
The Belief
It is an ancient tradition that women are restricted to enter at the core shrine of Shani Shingnapur (an ancient temple of Shanidev from Nevasa Taluka of Ahmednagar district), while men are allowed to pour oil on the lord Shanidev idol, and offer prayers.
The Action
A group of 400 women named Bhumata Ranragini Brigade announced a few days ago, that these women will enter into the temple’s restricted core shrine premise and will offer prayer. The Shani Shingnapur trust protested and the police warned the women group against their action and imposed IPC sec 144. The unfazed women tried to enter the temple premise and were held before entering. Subsequently they were taken to the custody by the police. Later the women were released.
The Conclusion
After incident, the outrage has been intensified at the village. The women’s group threatened the administration to the consequences if they are not allowed. The group said that they will gather 1500 women and will try again to infiltrate the temple. The group also urged the state C.M. Fadnavis to intervene into the matter.
Why can’t women offer prayers
In India, we have several religious places which are restricted with gender discrimination. Several Hindu temples and mosques have guidelines to not allow women in their premise, core shrine, near the grave of a male saint and in so many places. The ancient belief about the female gender has become one of the strict guidelines in our male dominated societies.
These restriction, prohibition, or any ban does not indicate an open and progressive culture. If we have a freedom of speech and expression, then we should also have a freedom from discrimination (gender, age, cast, and so on) because god never discriminates its followers.
I am totally against any such discrimination ( My personal view ).
