North Indian state Haryana has improved its child sex ratio crossing the 900 mark for the first time in last 10 years. The sex ratio at birth for December, 2015, stood at 903 girls per 1,000 boys. The improvement in sex ratio is a surprise as well boost for the cow state of India which has been infamous in recent years for female foeticide.
This is a major jump since 2011 when census figures revealed the state had the worst sex ratio in the country at 834.

A closer look at the districts reveals that Sirsa topped the table with 999 girls per 1000 boys. Official figure report that 12 districts have recorded gender ratio of above 900. Panchkula registered a sex ratio of 961 followed by Karnal (959), Fatehabad (952), Gurgaon (946), Sonipat (942), Jind (940), Rewari (931), Mewat (923), Bhiwani, Mahendragarh (912) and Hisar (906).
What did the Chief Minister say on sex ratio
Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar credited the success to the state’s multi-pronged strategy under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign.
“We have se
t a target to achieve sex ratio above 950 within the next six months for the entire state,” Khattar said while referring to Jhajjar that recorded the lowest sex ratio, he mentioned.
Last year on Jan 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme in Panipat.
Haryana health minister Anil Vij said the government had announced an award of Rs 1 lakh for each informer giving leads about illegal sex determination tests and termination of pregnancies. He said the drive helped counter female feticide.
“We have awarded 17 people whose information has yielded results,” the Health Minister said.
Reaping benefits of a tough action
Putting the numbers, as many as 58 cases and 72 FIRs were registered under the provisions of the PCPNDT and MTP Acts, respectively, from June, 2015, till date. Apart from this, prominent persons like ex-MLA, Indri, Karnal, Ashok Kashyap, who was caught red-handed while getting a sex detection test conducted, were put behind bars.
Chief Minister, Khattar said inter-state raids were conducted successfully in bordering states too. Khattar said that awareness rallies were organised to create awareness among the people.
