  • It’s not rocket science to comprehend that urbanization entails more than adequate provision of infrastructure that includes motorable roads, potable water, uninterrupted power supply, efficient law & order machinery, able administration, and responsive governance. These are not something out of the ordinary, but routine imperative necessities that cannot be wished away by the elected representatives. As a matter of fact, the tax-paying public is expected to be provided with such basic amenities without raising much noise. Mind you, since the public exchequer is handed over to the duly elected socialist government, there is no reason why our representatives should be pressured to loosen the purse strings. Sadly, what’s happening is quite the contrary.

  • Note how Bengaluru, which is often described as the Silicon Valley of India, a pensioner’s paradise, IT/BT capital of India, unicorn capital of India, the startup capital of India, and many more monikers aptly anointing the city that generates almost 70% of the state revenue. Unfortunately, the creaking infrastructure often hits the national/international headlines, bringing shame to the pride of the city and nation. The most pertinent question any honest tax-paying citizen would wish to ask the government is why we must keep begging for proper motorable roads. Any individual with a little common sense would infer how much of a difference it makes to the economy when the infrastructure is geared up to meet the ever-altering challenges of any urban dwelling.

  • People calling Bengaluru their homes must be spending at least some time every day cursing/berating/lamenting the sorry state of roads that makes commuting such a back-breaking experience. Forget about adults; looking at the sorry state of affairs, even school-going children are subjected to unmitigated hardships while commuting to and from educational institutions, which makes us go mad for the sheer lack of empathy and comprehension of our elected representatives in addressing the most common aspect of dignified living. The minister tasked with ensuring the development of the city, citing helplessness and challenges, is not only a bad sign but also reflects how the administration is repeatedly failing to live up to expectations.

  • Unscientific infrastructural development plans, incessant works undertaken by multiple agencies, lack of coordination between the civic authorities, never-ending Metro works, and poor workmanship in executing entrusted responsibilities are a deadly combination that has marred the city big-time. It’s extremely frustrating to observe government ministers and authorities talking about fixing the potholes rather than providing welcoming motorable roads that would remain unaffected for years. Monsoon rains simply washing away asphalted roads are not only poor optics for an aspirational country aiming for big, but also mirror our incompetence, exposing the distance between talks and execution. Hope we find a permanent solution to basic woes.
