- One of the most abiding visuals that bears significant importance for India as a country is the Independence Day speech delivered by the Prime Minister from the Red Fort after unfurling the National Flag with patriotic fervour. Over the years, the exhortations and spelling of policies have defined PM’s speeches, showing the world and the country in which way we are headed. Of course, many policy announcements have seen the day of light, but in the same vein, it can also be mentioned that several have been relegated to the back burner. However, none can dispute the fact that whatever announcements are made from the hallowed precincts of the Red Fort carry enough weight and direction for the country to progress. We know how the Pahalgam terrorist attack mobilized the entire country and the subsequent success in Operation Sindoor, leading to rejoicing in our military’s bravery. PM said Mission Sudarshan Chakra will be a powerful platform that will protect both public places and critical infrastructure and be operational by 2035. This is evoking comparison with Israel’s Iron Dome. More relevant is the stellar performance of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and Akashteer during Op Sindoor. But air defence is a dynamic and evolving technology. India faces two issues here.

- First, versatile and rapidly improving battlefield drones. IACCS and Akashteer need upgrades for this. Second, we are still using diverse platforms – Indian, Russian, Israeli, etc. This is less than ideal. If Sudarshan Chakra can address both these concerns, it will be a massive boost for military self-reliance. On GST, Modi promised Indians would pay a whole lot less for a lot of stuff they buy. Pegging this to Diwali was classic Modi. The biggest GST reform since its inception will make it basically a 2-rate system – 5% and 18% (a few sin goods will be taxed at 40%). This will encourage domestic consumption to pick up pace. Consumers are likely to benefit from many consumer goods moving to lower GST rates. Yes, the Bihar election is around the corner too.
