- General artificial intelligence (AGI) is the most happening in the world of information technology revolution presently storming the global community with such force that every country is looking forward to embracing the same most willingly. Needless to mention, the power of computing is so dynamic that it is unbelievable to comprehend how many advancements have been achieved in the last few years. And the advent of AI has simply bamboozled the global community with its wide-reaching implications in our daily lives. AI is being used in literally several critical sectors, including space, education, and medicine, making the present generation and the governments go wild in anticipation of unimaginable avenues the technology offers.

- Of course, countries are not thinking twice before pumping in billions of dollars to harvest the potential offered by AI. The USA and China are at the forefront of AI is a known fact. Chinese-made DeepSeek model hit the global headlines recently when it pipped ChatGPT on Apple’s store. Note that China aims to be the world’s AI superpower by 2030. DeepSeek’s astonishing achievement made many, including stock markets, think it had scaled the summit. Or is it? Markets are fickle. They swing from wild optimism – Nvidia’s surge since ChatGPT’s release in Nov 2022 – to despair in a minute. But three days after the funk, maybe we can take stock calmly. Is the US beaten in the AI race? Has China’s abundance of data trumped America’s chip might? What will unfold?

- Mind you, the race is far from over. The eventual goal is for AGI to endow machines with the ability to learn and reason like humans and nobody’s even close to it. Also, DeepSeek’s impressive mainly because it was built on a supposedly shoestring budget of $6mn, without the benefit of cutting-edge chips. As for research and writing algorithms, China has gone neck-and-neck with the US for years, so no surprise there. However, for AI or any other tech to thrive, openness also matters. China isn’t open. As a national newspaper reported, when DeepSeek was questioned as to what happened in Tiananmen Square, the answer was a mere apology, nothing more. No matter how powerful an AI model is, it can’t realise its full potential under censorship.

- Further, AI must contend with controls on govt data that includes everything from weather to tax returns. In 2015, China was ranked 93rd for the openness of govt data, while the US was 8th. This tells the story. Chinese apps can siphon user data worldwide, but this opportunity is shrinking. TikTok’s struggles in the US are a case in point. Notably, India has banned many Chinese apps for years, and Western nations are also increasingly uncomfortable with them. Many countries are cautioning against the usage of DeepSeek. Expectedly, reservations about Chinese AI apps will only grow among open societies because AI can spread misinformation, subvert elections, and compromise security systems. Let’s not gloss too much over the Chinese DeepSeek yet.
