NATIONAL SECURITY MATTERS SHOULD NOT BE POLITICISED!

  • There is one unwritten rule in the country’s political system that matters concerning/related to national security, sovereignty, safety, and well-being of the countrymen should not be overtly politicised to score brownie points. As is their wont, the political class, irrespective of party affiliations/philosophy/ideology, would want to fish in the troubled waters if they smell an opportunity to go one-up on the opposition. As you know, the Indian political system is imbued with a labyrinthine caste equation, interspersed with a communal versus secular narrative polarizing the country vertically. At the best of times, Indian political leaders will be found looking out for any opportunity to consolidate assiduously built vote banks to further their cause.

  • However, experience suggests the political class rising above parochial considerations to support the ruling dispensation at the Centre when it comes to the national security scenario. The nation has witnessed insurgency and terrorist related activities over the last few decades, especially in the long-troubled Jammu & Kashmir region. The cross-border terrorism being perpetrated by the deep state within the Pakistani establishment is not new for Indian citizens. Despite Indian security personnel thwarting umpteen attempts by the Pakistani establishment to foment trouble by executing heinous and dastardly terrorist attacks, the other side has failed to learn the lessons, continuing to target innocent civilians, resulting in loss of lives.

  • The Uri, Pulwama, and now the Pahalgam terrorist attacks in J&K further demonstrate how Pakistan simply fails to rise above petty thinking to unleash senseless violence via cross-border terrorism. The present dispensation at the Centre has countered these attacks by hitting the terrorist hideouts crossing the border earlier. While the Centre mulls taking appropriate action against the perpetrators resulting in the loss of 28 lives, some of the political statements emanating from the opposition leaders fail to represent the majority sentiment prevalent in the country. Heartening to note the rhetoric from the political class is on expected lines, with the all-party meeting convened by the Union Government receiving complete backing from the opposition.

  • Unfortunately, some of the opposition-ruled governments in the states are making statements going against the majority tenet espoused by the leaders representing other parties. Agreed, the intelligence lapses from the agencies tasked for the purpose have been glaring. A detailed inquiry and remedial measures to address lacunas in the security apparatus should be prioritized. No questions asked. Some of the opposition-ruled state chief ministers issuing statements about not precipitating the matter simply makes little sense. The need of the hour is to voice one opinion by backing the Union Government to initiate suitable measures to send across a message loud and clear that India will uphold zero tolerance towards terrorism related activities. Period.
