The Make in India campaign started by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started taking bigger steps now. Thanks to the campaign, not only small things; but big machines like airplanes will also be manufactured in India. A recent news is making headlines, as the F-16 jets will now be manufactured within India. As per the reports, these plans will be made by Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. The company deals in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.

Well, manufacturing jet planes in India will be a big achievement, as planes are always imported from other countries till date. Lockheed Martin itself has supplied six C130J Super Hercules planes to India in the year 2011 and more 6 helicopters will be delivered in the year 2017. The company and India has several joint ventures and contracts with over 1,000 employees.
Phil Shaw, Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin in India, expressed strong interest in having the F-16 made in India. He mentioned at the Singapore Airshow 2016.
“We are ready to manufacture F-16 in India and support the Make in India initiative,”
Lockheed Martin has announced its interest in manufacturing F-16 Jets in India and the talks between the two countries are in progress in this regards. If these talks take shape, then the F-16 manufacturing facility will be the biggest project under the Make in India campaign. However, the ‘when’ factor hasn’t been much elaborated, as the discussions are still on the government-to-government level.
Currently, Lockheed Martin is capable of manufacturing one jet a month from its plant in the US. According to market experts Lockheed Martin and the US government will benefit from this particular Make in India initiative. They will be able to manufacture F-16 jets at lower costs by using the low-cost manpower and capability in India. This will give rise to a very competitive market for F-16 jets in the world.
Lockheed Martin’s decision to choose India as its ideal option for low-cost and highly qualified engineering workforce will be sealed only after the governments of both the countries agree on the terms. If this agreement works out sooner, the first F-16 Jet will be out of the factory by 2019-2020.
