Lane Discipline on Indian Roads Needs Massive Improvements!

  • Many observant and law-abiding citizens of India would have noticed the standard of lane discipline on our roads has not improved on expected lines despite the latest technology-based traffic solutions making presence felt in more than one way. This is especially true of some of the most crowded metropolitan cities that have witnessed phenomenal growth and developments in recent times. Of course, all Indian roads are also witnessing a monumental number of two-wheelers and four-wheelers even as the government authorities strive to spruce up public transportation. It’s another matter altogether that we Indians consider owning transport of every hue as a matter of convenience in the absence of a reliable public transport system. Can’t help it.

  • This story plays out not only in metropolitan cities but also in other smaller cities and towns as well. On top of it, the apathy of the local administration to ensure the roads are commutable and worthy for the commuters is still a pipedream. This pathetic situation not only unfolds in smaller cities and towns but also extends to some of the high-density crowded metropolitan regions. Take for instance Bengaluru, the supposedly Silicon Valley of India, wherein the capital city of Karnataka is home to several top Information-Technology companies and other business behemoths also struggles to provide a smooth ride to millions of its citizens. Apart from the frustrating traffic snarls encountered, the lack of efficient commutable roads only adds to the mounting irritation.
  • The pothole-filled roads are such a common sight that they no longer evoke a strong sense of hatred towards the local authorities. We are beyond that now. Of course, cynicism and disillusionment are ubiquitous among every category of commuters who are not spared the harrowing experience of the despicable roads offered to citizens. Yes, the cursory assurances are issued by the agencies and the ministers responsible for the upkeep of the city roads but nothing concrete emerges on the ground. Many innocent and young lives have been lost courtesy of the apathy of the government agencies failing to ensure trouble-free commutable roads. Yet another disgusting aspect increasingly seen in Bengaluru is the scant disregard for the land discipline.

  • Several of us have witnessed how careless riders and drivers come at us from opposite directions even though the road is designated as a one-way. Such perilous attitudes on display not only place our lives in peril but also those hell-bent on breaking the land discipline as well. Shockingly, such blatant indiscipline is also seen in busy national highways, forget about clogged city roads desperately crying for help. The reason is apparent. The lack of deterrence and precipitous action from the law enforcement agencies. Even though the traffic police claim cameras installed on the roads capture traffic violations, whether the errant riders/drivers are penalized is open to conjecture. Strict enforcement of traffic rule violations should be prioritized.
