  • As the popular saying goes, humankind should always reminisce only about those occurrences of the past that are pleasant, worthy, positive, helpful and contribute to further the cause of our outlook in life. None wishes to recollect some of the most devastating, unpleasant, and deeply disturbing occurrences, having left behind such unforgettable wounds that render us completely handicapped physically as well as psychologically. Scars of those disturbances may be still fresh in memories that most of us would desperately wish to wipe off, or rather wishfully wish not to have happened at all in the first place. Of course, we cannot go back in time to undo what has happened in the past, but those memories popping up now cannot be stopped either. What is it, though?

  • I am referring to a once-in-a-century occurrence like the COVID-19 pandemic that hit humanity with such force in the year 2020 that the scars continue to remind us how debilitating those couple of years turned out to be for the entire global community in more than one way. It is vividly etched in memory how it all started with the dramatic announcement of a lockdown by the Prime Minister in India. Yes, we were all skeptical, worried, and apprehensive, not knowing how things would pan out in the coming days. Some of the visuals being shared on the television/social media platforms from China and other European countries were terrifying, to say the least. Scores of people being disallowed from venturing out by sealing the premises were horrifying.

  • Subsequent images/visuals of scores of people falling sick from the virulent virus spreading like wildfire were even more stomach-churning. Thousands of people reporting infected, hundreds of them suffocating to death, doctors/paramedics running helter-skelter in attending to the infected, economies of every country getting severely affected, hospitals running short of beds/oxygen/medicines/ventilators, and cries of families losing their loved ones cannot be ever forgotten. If the first wave created panic among the still-unsuspecting people, the more incapacitating effects of the second wave completely rendered humankind helpless. Sadly, ambulances lining up to ferry infected and dead bodies became such a common but dreadful sight.

  • Kudos to the medical fraternity for braving humongous challenges as well as placing their own lives at risk to extend services with utmost devotion. The personal lives of the medical fraternity took a severe beating during those painfully agonizing two years that need no further elaboration. Thankfully, the record-breaking invention of the vaccines allowed the global community to breathe a sigh of relief. However, the devastation of the virus has scarred billions of families for eternity simply because one or the other known perished during the melee. Of course, humanity prevailed, and indomitably resilient ingenuity took over the crisis that has enabled countless of us to remember those dark days. Prayerfully, let there be no such crises/challenges in the future.
