Indulging in Profeeteering During Pandemic Times is Inhuman!

  • I am absolutely certain most of the countrymen in India are not only god-fearing but also kind-hearted who would not mind loosening their purse strings to help the needy desperately searching for solace. Our philosophical bent of mind and the time-honored concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbhakam, meaning the world is one family, resonates with such fervor, acceptance, and wilful indulgence that it does not necessitate a fervent appeal to participate. We, the Indians, expect neither a second invitation nor goading to showcase our soft side by rising to the occasion quite enthusiastically. History is replete with such stories.

  • There is any number of occasions witnessed in the country characterized by catastrophes, heart-wrenching incidents/accidents, monumental disasters, and extraordinary situations compelling the citizens to not only contribute handsomely towards the larger good of the people and society but also solidly standing shoulder to shoulder with the government of the day in ensuring the normalcy returns sooner than later. Individuals, groups, organizations, and business/corporate houses have time and again shown the world how resilient the countrymen are in showcasing our humane side in the face of unforeseen circumstances.
  • As you are all aware, the country is in the throng of an unprecedented pandemic wrought by the virulent virus which is ravaging nook and corner through its relentless uptick consuming thousands of precious lives and livelihood along the way. The Government and all associated agencies along with every single citizen of the country are doing their utmost best to stay afloat as the economy comes under severe strain courtesy of unavoidable restrictions as a measure to tame the virus spread. Since the country’s healthcare infrastructure is not adequate nor strong enough to handle the population density of infected patients, there is a widespread demand and cry for life-saving equipment as well as medicines all around.

  • As reports from diverse mediums rightly suggest, there are supply challenges encountered vis-à-vis lifesaving liquid medical oxygen, steroids/drugs, shortages of beds/ICUs/ventilators in hospitals, and inadequate manpower of doctors/nurses to treat the millions of infected patients. Whereas the medical fraternity and the government agencies are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the lives are not sacrificed for want of the abovementioned instruments, there is any number of unscrupulous and anti-social elements who are hell-bent on making profiteering even as the entire country gasps for breather/relief.
  • Rampant hoarding of oxygen cylinders, drugs/steroids, indulging in black marketing, charging exorbitant rates for ambulances, and selling these prized elixirs of life at atrocious rates knowing fully well that people in desperate needs will not mind shelling out an outrageous amount of money is plain insensitive, disgusting, and totally despicable on the part of few who cannot but have blood money on their hands. How hypocritical and inhumane we can become can be best illustrated by the irresponsible few who wish to indulge in making profits out of dead bodies.
  • Come to think of it, the majority of us are god-fearing and take pride in visiting places of worship on a pilgrimage to seek solace, benevolence, and fortitude from the almighty. Unfortunately, the lure of lucre over showcasing genuine understanding, compassion, empathy, sympathy, and charity has overtaken some of the elements inimical to the interests of the society. One only wishes a better sense prevails over these miserable souls to realize the futility of fleecing the distressed people during gloomy times. Honest introspection and benediction would ensure the unscrupulous elements realize the futility of garnering blood money. Better late than never!
