  • More than two months and still counting as the farmers agitating over the three Agri Laws appears nowhere near finding any agreeable solutions leading to an amicable resolution of the issue. What started as a small movement has gained tremendous traction over the last few days despite receiving wide condemnations for the violence and rioting witnessed on Republic Day on 26th January. Initially perceived as a setback dramatically altered when one of the protesting farmer union leaders emotionally appealed to strengthen the movement leading to a sea of farmers descending on the protest sites in even greater numbers.

  • Despite several rounds of dialogues, negotiations, and deliberations between the farmer unions and the Union Agriculture Minister, very little is yielded. Much to his credit, the Agriculture Minister has even offered to keep the Agri Laws in abeyance for 18 months to allay apprehensions arising out of the reformist measures. On the other hand, the farmer leaders are hell-bent on repealing the laws altogether. Of course, as can be expected in a mature democratic country, the process of peaceful dialogues is underway and an imminent solution to resolve the issue is surely not too far away. The process might appear inflexible but will eventually emerge satisfactorily.
  • Amidst all this, there were for and against views emanating from different personalities within the country prominently highlighting the democratic vibrancy and the Constitutionally mandated freedom of expression and speech gaining acceptability as well as tolerability. Any peaceful protests are hallmarks of a thriving democracy that needs no reiteration but perpetrating violence by denigrating the rule of the law of the land finds no place as the enforcement machinery had to invariably step in to restore order. Various law enforcing agencies did just that aftermath of the violence on Republic Day to ensure other citizens are not inconvenienced.

  • Trust few of the personalities not even remotely associated with the nation attempting to further muddy the already muddied water by issuing unsolicited and ill-advised statements on the farm issues donning facetious morality. This only gives further credence to the views that efforts are afoot to create sensationalist and false propaganda. Global social media is agog with hashtags resembling a warzone with many celebrities joining with their biased and uninformed viewpoints. Make no mistake, we as a nation are capable enough to handle any irksome issues and satisfactorily at that without any intervention or meddling from unknown quarters.
  • Many renowned Indian celebrities have said so as well urging the citizens to not let outside entities sway our opinions. The need of the hour is to stay united against elements inimical to the country’s interest by showing extraordinary resilience in addressing matters of concern with amicability. Word of caution to authorities concerned as well to not react impetuously to foreign celebrities’ claims unwittingly providing grist, traction, and undeserving prime time soundbytes.
