- Make no mistake, environmental degradation is manifesting in such a devastatingly debilitating form that the erratic weather patterns as an offshoot have become the norm rather than an exception. Little wonder, that global warming because of environmental degradation has paved the way for unseasonal weather occurrences like rain, floods, thunderstorms, droughts, famine, and extremely unpredictable patterns. The global leadership led by the Big Five and the UN have not only expressed grave concerns about matters that might affect future generations but also pose tremendous challenges to the general public because of the accompanying vagaries. India is not immune from the counterproductive environmental degradation, you see.

- People of the country are quite aware of how the erratic weather patterns are being played out of late leading to mounting challenges to mitigate the woes of the people. Of course, as compared to some of the most advanced nations in the world, the Indian government has set things in the right direction by avowing to reduce carbon footprints to acceptable levels. Carbon emissions from the most advanced nations are incomparable to what India generates. It’s amusing to note that some US leaders deny climate change, but Indian leaders don’t. However, our leaders sanction environmentally risky projects much against the advice of the experts. Let’s see how the issue is construed. A pair of hurricanes battered Americans in recent days causing heated debates there.
- Mind you, this is ahead of the US presidential elections. True to his character, Trump has slammed the Biden-Harris administration’s rescue and relief operations. But what is making things more complex is the deluge of fake information that hurricanes Helene and Milton have brought in their wake. The US is no less entertaining than our Dance of Democracy, you see. Republican Trump supporters have been quick to spread conspiracy theories. They have accused the Biden-Harris administration of manipulating the weather and sending the hurricanes to Republican areas. You read it right. We thought only the Indian political class was capable of bandying inane and incomprehensible accusations targeting opposition leaders. The US is no less, as you can see here.

- Fake, AI-generated images of devastation have been used to create an impression of administrative apathy. Trump himself has repeated false claims about hurricane relief funds being spent on illegal migrants. At the heart of the issue is the refusal of Trumpsters and other conservative Republicans to acknowledge the role of climate change in manifesting extreme weather. Scientific studies say climate change has made hurricanes more powerful and rainier. But the huge oil lobby in the US would have one believe that it’s all normal and any devastation wrought is due to official incompetence. India’s disaster management response has been praiseworthy but sanctioning unviable projects in eco-sensitive zones should be curtailed.
