- People in the know would have averred with absolute conviction the apprehension caused by the coming together of Donald Trump and the richest man in the world, Elon Musk. The global community is aware of how the most bruising, vicious, and vitriolic campaign for the most powerful office in the world, the president of the United States of America, panned out before the people cast their votes. The way Republican candidate Donald Trump emerged victorious hands down was nothing short of a spectacular show, rendering the incumbent Democratic president Joe Biden literally helpless. What must have caught the imagination of the global community was the overwhelmingly nativist and protectionist measures espoused during the campaign.

- That the campaign struck a definite chord with the local Americans on the back of the Make America Great Again war cry must have been music to the loyal vote bank, but it was received with great concern by the global community. One of the most defining factors of the Trump campaign was the wholehearted support extended by the richest individual in the world, Elon Musk. Not only were millions of dollars funded during the campaign, but it also made it plain obvious that Musk will have a definite role to play in the Trump administration, with a focus on reducing what the duo felt was unnecessary expenditure. No sooner than the maverick and extremely unpredictable Trump took over the reins, the mayhem in the global order commenced, leading to disruptions.

- Whereas the pet project of Trump in the form of import tariff taxes took effect, which also witnessed flip-flops vis-à-vis pauses, more tariffs, suspension, deadline extension, and reintroduction. However, what caused great discontentment among the American citizens, especially officials, was the way Elon Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to take shape. The downsizing of the administration machinery alongside the budget cuts formed the crux of this department. After causing a mayhem of sorts, Musk has left the DOGE building. Of course, like taxes and deaths, Musk’s exit was a given. US law allowed him a maximum of 130 days, and he left with one remaining. As an EV maker, he knows the importance of reserve charge.

- And range anxiety is a terrible thing. You aim to drive $2tn out of the federal budget but stall at $160bn. That’s 8% mission accomplished. Poor, but better than a hat-trick of SpaceX’s Starship failures in five months. Thus, Musk should pull over and take stock. On the net worth front, allying with Trump has been good for him. Yes, some Teslas were burnt, and Tesla stock nosedived, but it’s much higher than at this time last year, and Musk is about $175bn richer than he was at the same time last year. And while he’s leaving after describing Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill as disappointing, Trump’s not nursing a grudge – He will, always, be with us, Elon is terrific. That means, government contracts for SpaceX won’t dry up. Musk will remain mercurial, though.
