Checking emailWhat does the study say about health hazards of checking emails

Today’s world is connected digitally and emails are an indivisible part of our lives. On one hand, emails are the blessings, as you can stay connected to your work at any time and from anywhere. However, the study that surveyed 2000 people from different fields tells a different story.

As per the study, checking emails constantly can raise our stress levels. This specifically depends on how we deal with the incoming flow of emails and those getting collected in the inbox.

Unless you’re very young or very old, it’s likely you have some kind of relationship with email, whether you get hundreds of messages a day or a few dozen a week. A new study suggests that how we deal with these incoming messages could be affecting our stress levels and overall health. At the end of the survey, it was concluded, those who spent the most time organizing and checking emails, felt pressurized the most.

Richard MacKinnon, a member of the survey team mentioned,

“Our research shows that email is a double-edged sword. Whilst it can be a valuable communication tool, it’s clear that it’s a source of stress of frustration for many of us. The people who reported it being most useful to them also reported the highest levels of email pressure! The habits we develop, the emotional reactions we have to messages, and the unwritten organisational etiquette around email, combine into a toxic source of stress which could be negatively impacting our productivity and wellbeing.”

Checking emailsThe study mentions that those who have the email app open throughout the day, feel stressed out the most at the end of the day. Along with the app, people who check emails immediately after waking up and just before going to sleep, also suffer from significant levels of stress. Checking emails on a constant basis can be a huge reason of why managers are stressed out more than those at a non-managerial position.

Being organized is a good quality, however, being overly organized and checking emails frequently can lead to much disastrous outcomes than a good result. Here is the full report on this study.
