Yes, rising levels of pollution has been a matter of concern in India. Delhi and Mumbai are setting records for the pollution levels in the country. Much of it has been a contribution of the cars running on the Indian roads. The Indian government is helping the carmakers to gear up and launch affordable hybrid and electric cars soon in India.

The current state of air-pollution in India has been worsening each and every day and has become a reason for concern for many. The Indian government has taken certain steps to control it by putting in place certain temporary schemes, like temporary banning of diesel engines above 2,000cc, the odd-even car plan .

In addition to these temporary schemes, the government is also looking to induce the car makers to start making cars which are eco-friendly and fuel efficient, like fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. They are offering great incentives to them to speed up this process in order to Go-Green.

1. Indian Market for hybrid and electric cars

The Indian Auto market is the fastest growing market around the world. But when it comes to hybrid and electric cars the market is comparably too tiny. This is mainly due to high cost involved which has not allowed hybrid technology to grow substantially. But again, now with this government initiative the entire country finally joins hand to fix the pollution problem.

2. Delhi Expo 2016

India’s biggest car show, which is starting on Wednesday, will showcase their green cars. Foreign firms like Toyota Motor Corp will also join the domestic carmakers like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.

3. Government aid for green cars

FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Cars) scheme was introduced the Indian government last year. This scheme offers concessions of up to 1.38 lakh on the sale of such vehicles. Initially the scheme was presented before the New Delhi court with a plan to offer it just for 2 years, but now it is likely to be extended till 2020.

4. Temporary ban on the sale of large diesel cars in Capital

The rampant pollution status has forced the Indian governments to take quick and immediate control measures. Last month a top court ordered an overnight temporary ban on the sale of large diesel cars in the Capital. New Delhi as we all know is now among the world’s most polluted cities.

5. Toyota’s strategy is to go for hybridisation

According to Naomi Ishii, the head of Toyota’s India unit their strategy is to go for hybridisation. They have not yet revealed any specific timeline, but the Japanese carmaker has stated to bring in their first bring hybrid technology for more premium models. Post which they will enter in for the mass segment, this is due to the high import costs of various required components.

Hyundai Motor Co , Honda Motor Co and General Motors, are yet to be won over on bringing hybrid technology to India. In this year’s auto expo, they will focus on gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles. Presently, Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki have already introduced mild-hybrid systems on their vehicles, these are far less expensive than full hybrid technology and on the same time they still help to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
