  • Let’s not beat around the bush about the creaking infrastructural issues in the Silicon Valley of India. Aptly monikered as the Garden City of India, IT/BT capital of India, the startup capital of India, and the pensioner’s paradise, Bengaluru has gained tremendous prominence not only in the country but also globally for offering a welcoming ecosystem to sustain cutting-edge technologies being unveiled. The salubrious weather conditions round the year, availability of skilled manpower, satisfactory law & order, capable administration and governance willing to extend every possible support for the businesses to establish shop, make Bengaluru an ideal destination. However, monumental growth wasn’t supported in equal measures by the infrastructure, though.

  • Bengaluru has gained recognition by standing steadfast for innovation, openness, and free thought. However, the city has witnessed exponential development in the last few decades, with lakhs of citizens choosing Bengaluru as the place since the opportunities for all strata of society areequally available here. Sadly, the infrastructure in the form of motorable roads, uninterrupted power supply, adequate availability of potable water, and an efficient law & order system is creaking courtesy of the ballooning population. The most disheartening aspect of the city is the poor conditions of the roads that are perennially filled with craters and potholes. This is where the citizens and business leaders have been raising incessant questions in the last few months.

  • Undeniably, none of the citizens in the city is happy about the poor conditions of the roads. Yes, the present dispensation in the state came to power after winning the mandate with an overwhelming majority on the back of five free guarantee schemes. The fund allotment to support the schemes meant the government had to compromise on the other basic aspects, like maintenance and/or further development of infrastructure. Even though the government has announced allocating funds for the roads after citizens and business leaders raised concerns, the action on the ground appears to be nowhere near taking up the works on expected lines. The moot point to ponder over here is why the developed roads are getting washed away in no time.

  • Is it because of the poor workmanship that the alleged nexus between the political masters and contractors ensures the quality of the execution suffers big time?  It’s unfathomable to note how the first showers of the monsoon are enough to disintegrate the roads, exposing potholes and craters in no time. Agreed, the number of vehicles hitting the city is growing by the day. Nonetheless, the least the commuters expect is motorable roads by overlooking the most irritating aspects like traffic jams, slow-moving vehicles, non-existent lane discipline, and lack of public transport to support the increasingly inadequate alternative mobility like Metro trains. Hopefully, the government should start acting on the grounds sooner rather than later, vis-à-vis roads.
