  • As someone closely following the political fortunes of the country, it is not surprising to see Indian politicians and their respective parties making every effort to whip up communal frenzy as well as emotionally charged narrations to keep the citizens interested. As you must be quite familiar by now, our political class are seasoned campaigners who never let go of an opportunity to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the eyes of the electorate. Thus, any issue that potentially carries the wherewithal to score brownie points within the electoral community will be not only pursued with great rigor by the politicians but also given an entirely different hue to ensure the matter remains relevant for a substantial period.

  • This gets accentuated whenever an important election beckons. We know the general elections are scheduled for May 2024. The two main national parties have already got into the groove with the NDA and the INDIA blocks gearing up to face-off. The communal and secular blocks identified with the BJP and Congress-led parties have already started making all the electorally right noises. With the christening of the opposition-led block as INDIA, the BJP-led NDA has started making counter moves in right earnest. The ruling dispensation appears now all set to front BHARAT in place of India in all its official communication. This came to the fore when the invites for the G20 summit were forwarded in the name of the Rashtrapati of Bharat.
  • Mind you, the Prime Minister has been candid enough right through the last few years of his tenure about systematically removing the colonial era tags by vigorously pushing ahead with the desi narration to usher in requisite changes to that effect. His Independence Day speech also resonated with the same narration wherein he exhorted the citizens to not only feel proud about embracing the desi commodities wherever possible to push AtmaNirbharta’s mission but also endeavor to uphold the self-sustaining virtues of locally developed business verticals. PM has been consistent in his exhortations on the matter including when the devastating effects of the pandemic simply overwhelmed the nation.

  • Undoubtedly, ever since the opposition alliance made a pre-emptive claim to the acronym INDIA, BJP has been in a quandary. Simply because for the party that claims nationalism as its middle name, this appropriation by the opposition has rankled the saffron brigade. Add to it the opposition tagline for the next election Judega Bharat, Jitega India has only made the BJP feel uncomfortable. Ever since the special session of the Parliament was called from 18-22 September, the rumor mills have been ripe with speculations that the Centre would change the name of the country from India to Bharat. On its part, the BJP leadership has denied the charge. But the BJP is known to deliver the unexpected. Let’s wait and watch what is in store for us.
