  • Both the central and state governments should be feeling relieved what with the anticipated challenges vis-à-vis Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus showing definite signs of ebbing throughout the country. As compared to two previous Covid-19 waves, the third wave has been less severe since the confirmed infection rates were well within manageable levels as also the dreaded death rates not crossing alarming figures too. As you are aware, the Western and European countries were tested to the core during several waves but thankfully, the Indian population was spared of the ominous threats to a great extent this time around.

  • Similar to other countries, Omicron did witness a rapid surge in infection but plunged equally drastically as well. Much to the delight of the countrymen, all veritable economic activities have resumed after two long years of restrictions of varied nature. As can be seen, India has been spared the worst in this wave unlike the US or East Asian countries. One might be wondering as to what the reasons for the small mercies from the rampaging virus could be. Evidently, India may have been helped by the high seropositivity, noted by national and state serosurveys conducted in the latter half of 2021, gained through vaccination and natural infections.
  • Further, India’s vaccination program has been impressive despite facing initial challenges in the form of adequate vaccine production, supply-side availability, and awareness amongst the eligible. As per the latest reports available, 95% of the 15-plus population has received one dose and 78% both doses. However, the vaccination program has been slowing down in recent weeks, with ambitious targets no longer being set to ensure the inoculation efforts reach out to nook and corner of the country. Note that only 40% of healthcare workers, 33% of frontline workers, and 8% of the over-60 population have taken precaution doses as of now.

  • With national test positivity rates slipping below 1%, naturally, Covid has been replaced by other economic worries including the potentially cataclysmic Russian incursions into Ukraine expected to essay precipitative role. Nonetheless, it would be premature to forget the virus, recalling how it rebounded and triggered the second wave. As if on cue, the IIT-Kanpur study predicting a fourth wave that could begin in June is a potent warning to governments and citizens to desist from completely lowering their guard. Needless to mention, alongside vaccination, other public health strategies must not be neglected either.
  • Remember, serosurveys at regular intervals can help gauge waning antibodies. Also, genome sequencing on a larger proportion of positive samples will only help in improving surveillance on new variants. Hence, this strategy should be diligently pursued. As workplaces and schools reopen, rapid antigen test (RAT) kits must be deployed for symptomatic and random testing. With many adult Indians having co-morbidities, booster doses must be allowed for anyone who receives medical advice for a third dose. Masking in public should continue. Mind you, we are still in the phase of living with the virus and any complacency could reverse the gains.
