- The Indian citizens familiar with the political scenario, especially from Karnataka, must be heaving a sigh of relief at the turn of events that culminated in the swearing-in of the Chief Minister-in-waiting DK Shivakumar after a long wait. Though the Congress party was blessed with an absolute majority by the electorate in the state assembly elections, the clamour to head the government by the top two leaders always hit the news headlines for all the wrong reasons. Now that the issue of Chief Ministership is resolved for good, the attention has shifted to the cabinet berths and the portfolios. Not only that, but the caste equations are also an integral part of the Indian political firmament, and the same is on full display with the aspirants vying for the available pie.

- A few senior legislators have already made their unhappiness amply evident with the allocated portfolios. And many are leaving no stone unturned in pulling the strings with the high command, with an eye for landing a lucrative ministry. Agreed, whenever a government assumes afresh, these pulls and pressures from the legislators are not only expected but also a given fact that must be delicately considered as well as addressed by the top leadership. The Congress leadership also must be aware that in less than two years, the state will head to the polls. As such, the change of leadership at the top should be accompanied by pushing ahead with the developmental agenda of the previous regime. And also adding some more to ensure the electorate is kept interested.

- CM DK Shivakumar is a seasoned administrator and organizer with decades of experience. It is here that his experience should come to the forefront by ensuring the developmental factors are given further fillip. The five guarantee schemes are the benchmark of the Congress in Karnataka. In addition to the same, a few more are expected to be unleashed by the new CM to ensure all strata of society are covered. The most crucial aspect here is to accord the deserving attention to Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, and the major revenue-generating area for the state. Note that almost 70% of the state’s revenue is generated by Bengaluru. However, the CM is aware of the challenges plaguing the city for decades now. He is most capable of addressing it as well.

- The basic infrastructure, like uninterrupted power supply, potable water, commutable roads, and law & order, should be the focus of attention for the administration. Come to think of it, these are really basic amenities that should be in place without anybody even raising an eyebrow. However, Bengaluru always hits the news headlines for all the wrong reasons when one decent shower halts the city at several places because of inadequate infrastructure. The civic agencies tasked with providing these amenities have really failed year after year, leaving the citizens exasperated. Little wonder the cynicism of the Bengaluru citizens vis-à-vis the civic agencies needs no corroboration. Hopefully, the new CM will devote enough time, effort, and resources to spruce up Bengaluru’s basic infra. The citizens and big business houses of Bengaluru are looking forward to good days.
