THE POLITICAL TEMPERATURE WILL HEAD NORTHWARDS IN THE COMING MONTHS!

  • People closely following the fortunes of the political scenario in the Indian context would be keenly observing the developments underway in the last decade or so, and the way the narrative will witness even more polarization in the coming months. As we know, the Indian political landscape is completely premised on the labyrinthine caste equations, with the communal versus secular narrative holding the center stage. Notably, there are hardly any political parties left in the fray that can be firmly termed as truly national. Except for the increasingly expanding Bharatiya Janata Party and, to a lesser extent, the Grand Old Party, there are not many political parties that can be bracketed as national. That space has been occupied by the two principal national parties.

  • However, people aware of the political churning in the country would know how critical the regional parties’ roles have become in the last few decades. Gone are the days when the national parties used to get a brute majority on their own to form the Union Government. The situation on the ground has altered completely. The national parties are forced to ally and/or seal seat-sharing arrangements well before the elections are announced. Thus, what we are witnessing now is the realignment and regrouping of allies for the critical state assembly elections. Thus, the two major alliances, the National Democratic Alliance and the United Progressive Alliance, hold sway in deciding which way they strive to impress upon the electorate. This is interesting and intriguing.

  • As you know, the BJP-led NDA could not muster the anticipated number of seats in the last Parliamentary elections, even as the Congress-led UPA made substantial progress vis-à-vis Lok Sabha tally. Creditably, the BJP-led NDA has showcased admirable tenacity in winning critical state assembly elections, viz., Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Bihar. This is an astonishing turnaround, to say the least. The year 2026 will also witness key elections in the states of Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Tamil Nadu. The BJP’s formidable election machinery is acknowledged as relentless and hence, will be pressing ahead full throttle in these states. The party has high hopes for West Bengal. Will it come to power, though?

  • The BJP believes it has more than a fair chance of winning the mandate of the electorate in West Bengal this time around. Moreover, slowly but steadily, the BJP has started leaving behind its imprints in relatively challenging states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The recent municipal election results in Kerala must be encouraging for the saffron brigade. Nonetheless, the party will face tough challenges in Tamil Nadu to break the formidable presence of the two Dravidian regional parties. Going by the look of things, the Assam election results should favour the ruling dispensation unless the anti-incumbency completely alters the equation. As such, expect the coming months to unveil an electoral fever pitch with no holds barred campaigning to boot.
