The seemingly infinite prospects offered by AI to humankind not only make cutting-edge technology an extremely welcome invention but also provide numerous potential benefits for governments worldwide to explore for the greater benefit of their respective citizens. No one is complaining. However, the flip side of technology is the increasing misuse by anti-social elements against gullible people.

It is simply unimaginable how AI can be used to create deepfakes targeting women and children as well. This is where Big Tech must be held accountable when its tools incite sexual harassment of women and minors, when unscrupulous AI simply goes berserk, causing irreparable damage to the physical and mental well-being of those targeted. As reported extensively, Grok’s been answering specific prompts by ‘undressing’ and ‘nudifying’ women and minors. Actual women and minors. This has understandably drawn outrage and alarm across the world, and in India as well.

Elon Musk says that a pen doesn’t decide what gets written. The person holding it does. Wow! So much for showcasing responsibility. This is typical Big Tech doublespeak. These companies’ crazy high valuations are riding on wide open access to human data and engagement. But when humans get hurt, they deny all accountability. As AI becomes a pervasive force across human society, its expressions aren’t its own. These are products of its programming – how companies design it, train it, deploy it. As for punishing whoever’s holding the pen, that would be X, much more than any single user. There are two important aspects to fixing such problems. First, it’s not just about adjusting the AI filters, but also investing in human moderators and localization. Second, it’s about making sure that terrible gender inequality doesn’t get baked into the building blocks of tomorrow. AI tools are also showing male bias in recruitment, healthcare, and criminal justice. Big Tech needs to repair the biases. GOI and other govts need to be super vigilant and stop this at once.
