BENGALURU’S INFRASTRUCTURE IS CRUMBLING, UNQUESTIONABLY!

  • For too long, Bengaluru residents have been putting up with the deteriorating infrastructure, especially poor road conditions and the accompanying traffic bottlenecks across the city is stating the obvious. What was once construed as a pensioner’s paradise, the Silicon Valley of India, the garden city of India, the startup capital of India, and many such monikers labelled on Bengaluru, has sadly started appearing unrelatable. Simply because Bengaluru’s infrastructure has spectacularly failed to reciprocate in commensurate with the phenomenal growth witnessed over the years. The onus of providing adequate infrastructural support solely rests with the state government and the designated civic agencies tasked to ensure the same. Where are they?

  • Unfortunately, despite repeated pleas, cries, help, articles, satires, mocking, memes, banter, and increasingly frustrated and cynical outbursts against the below-par functioning of the civic agencies in providing at least motorable roads, the failure of the authorities to rise to the challenges has been stark. Reams and reams have been written about the extremely shoddy work dotting every stretch of the city. Sadly, the political leaders and the civic authorities’ repeated assurances to provide motorable roads have started sounding hollow. The number of potholes on every road and some even resembling huge craters should make any conscientious government worker feel ashamed, but no one even appears to care about the treacherous condition anymore.

  • The moot point to ponder over here is why a properly asphalted road with taxpayers’ money goes down the drain when monsoon rains make their presence felt. Common sense dictates that any workmanship, like asphalting roads undertaken by the civic agencies, should not only serve the purpose for years but also ensure that commuters are not inconvenienced for too long at all. However, roads in Bengaluru are simply turning into veritable death traps for two-wheeler riders who are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to the poor situation on offer. The question to be asked here is why we are talking about filling the potholes rather than seeking answers from the authorities for failing to provide pothole-free roads in the first place.

  • It’s worth reiterating that Bengaluru alone rakes in more than 70% of the state revenue, but the condition of the infrastructure has completely collapsed. School children spending more than 2 to 3 hours one way while commuting speak volumes about the worsening conditions of the prevailing inadequate infrastructure. Astonishingly, the state government is most adept at issuing statements promising to fill the potholes rather than executing effective measures to ensure asphalted roads stand the test of time without appearing to give up with one rain lashing the city. Little wonder, the businessmen/entrepreneurs are voicing discontentment, with some looking to move out, knowing nothing much can be expected from the government. This is sad.
