- The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, may desperately wish to portray an image of himself as a cutthroat political leader, a shrewd businessman, a die-hard nationalist, and most importantly, as a messiah for making this world a better place to live. The number of bombastic claims that Trump made leading up to the polls in the USA and the aftermath of his election for the second term of presidency makes one wonder how much those tall proclamations have come true. Save for disrupting the established world order by his ill-advised and illogical tariff war, precious little has been achieved, though. However, the destabilization in the global economy courtesy of Trump’s tariff war is unfolding, causing widespread disruptions.

- Russia-Ukraine war continues unabated. The Israel-Hamas war continues relentlessly. Trump’s tall claims of stopping this war in a day of assuming office have been proved as nothing but just that, claims. Nonetheless, his continued support for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu needs an immediate rethinking. The recent targeting of Hamas in Doha by Tel Aviv violated Qatari sovereignty, creating an impression that the US seems powerless when it comes to Israel. As reports suggest, Qatar will host an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in the next few days as part of its regional response to Israel’s strike. The strike targeted senior members of Hamas’s negotiating team; at least one Qatari, in Doha to discuss a new ceasefire, was also killed.

- Mind you, for Israel to carry out the assault at this particular moment highlights two things. First, it clearly doesn’t want to negotiate an end to the Gaza conflict, and two, it has no regard for Qatar’s territorial sovereignty or principles of international law. Unsurprisingly, regional leaders from the UAE, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia have been heading to Doha in a show of solidarity. PM Modi too has condemned the Israeli strike on Qatar. Note that Qatar has long been a mediator between Israel and Hamas. But this was done with Israel’s blessing. Doha, for years, has made aid payments to Hamas in Gaza in a deal approved by Tel Aviv and signed off by Bibi in his earlier term. Thus, for Israel to openly violate Qatar’s sovereignty is hard to justify.

- In doing so, Tel Aviv is also embarrassing Trump. Qatar hosts the largest American base in West Asia, which Iran targeted in June. Suppose it’s true that Trump only got to know about Israel’s plans for Qatar when Israeli fighters were already airborne. In that case, it means that Netanyahu believes White House has no option but to go along with his irrational plans. Of course, Netanyahu has long believed that he can manipulate the US through the American Jewish lobby. So, he feels free to openly disregard Trump. Ironically, the US alone can stop Israel. If Washington threatens to withhold weapons shipments to Tel Aviv, the latter will feel sufficient pressure. But will Trump do it? Let’s see. Given the mercurial nature of Trump, one may never know
