- The tariff war unleashed by the maverick, petulant, arrogant, and transactional president of the United States of America on the global community needs no elaboration. Ever since assuming office, the only significant action undertaken by Donald Trump is to announce different tariffs on several countries on imported products. Not only that, as you are aware, he has suspended those announcements, announced fresh ones with new deadlines, postponed the same for a few weeks/months, and went about implementing the tariffs much to the disconcertment of the global community grappling with the unpleasant situation emerging out of the moves. Indian products have been tariffed at 25% and an additional 25% for buying Russian oil.

- The moot point to ponder over here is how Indian leadership would be addressing the mounting challenges on this front since the import tariffs will have a cascading effect on the domestic production sooner than later. Meanwhile, the way Trump is pressing ahead with imposing import tariff against India as well as hobnobbing with the Pakistani army general must be raising more than a few eyebrows about the intent of the USA leadership. Remember, Pakistani army chief has already made two visits to the USA, and the second one resulted in unwarranted nuclear sabre-rattling. Most disconcertingly, why on earth would the USA wish to lay out a red carpet to the nation that is the featherbed of global terrorism after vociferously denigrating it for years.

- Unfathomable as it sounds, there must be only one reason that readily comes to mind as to why Trump is acting in the way he is at the moment. His elephantine ego has apparently been rubbed the wrong way with the top Indian leadership unequivocally denying Trump’s role in ensuring the ceasefire between India and Pakistan when the short duration conflict subsequent to the Pahalgam attack escalated. Despite the Indian leadership led by the Prime Minister categorically denying any role played by outside leader, including the USA, Trump has consistently claimed at every given opportunity of stopping further escalation between the two nuclear armed nations. The whole world knows how bombastic Trump can be by now. It’s no longer a secret, you see.

- Operation Sindoor was suspended solely on the request of the Pakistani DGMO. And Trump must understand that the present dispensation at the Centre led by the indefatigable Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not pander to the whims and fancies of a leader whose country’s hegemony of earlier times no longer exists in the increasingly multipolar world order. Mind you, India is the most populous nation and the cradle of democracy that will always heed to the interests of its people rather than toe the line of a leader who thinks other countries will be obsequious to the USA. Not anymore. Pakistan is the hotbed of terrorism and terrorists is not lost on the global community. Simply cosying up to the Paki army chief will be met with a discernable scorn.
