  • That the whole world is experiencing environmental degradation brought by weather vagaries and turmoil would be tantamount to an understatement. The global community is aware of it, and efforts are afoot to address this by reducing the carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions. The top leadership, including the United Nations, is cognizant of the phenomenon of environmental degradation, leaving no stone unturned to bring down the rising temperatures, the root cause of erratic weather patterns. Unfortunately, Bengaluru finds itself amid such chaotic occurrences whenever the rain gods wish to make their presence felt. As it is, the heat factor makes even the once salubrious Bengaluru feel like any other city up north. The summer months are becoming increasingly unbearable owing to the heat generated courtesy of various factors, including unprecedented haphazard infrastructure developments, making the city resemble one huge swathe of concrete jungle.

The recent pre-monsoon rains that battered the city with record-breaking downpours have once again laid bare the inadequacies of the civic administration to provide succor to the inhabitants and the commuters. The potholed roads have already made the Bengaluru citizens’ commuting experience nothing short of hell. Whatever dodgy patchwork of pot filling has been washed away by the pounding in the last couple of weeks. Low-lying areas getting inundated by rainwater in some of the tony localities have become a recurring phenomenon. Why does the administration repeatedly fail to address some of the basic maintenance protocols to ward off rain-induced threats? Bengaluru citizens have become cynical, expecting nothing. The drudgery continues.
