- The Indian population is witness to and by now familiar with the formidable electoral machinery of the Bharatiya Janata Party that never takes the foot off the pedal in intensity and/or zeal to press ahead with the mantra of winning the battle single-mindedly. Last year’s parliamentary polls didn’t yield the desired results for the Narendra Modi-led NDA is well documented. The below-par results did dent the hallowed reputation of the impressive Narendra Modi-led NDA largely but did not outwardly diminish the focus of the BJP’s poll machinery to kick on. However, the resounding wins in the state assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and now Delhi have reinforced the unquestionable charisma of Modi with the voters fortifying their faith in him.

- As you are aware, the opposition ranks had closed ranks by forming the INDI alliance before the Parliamentary elections to take on the might of the BJP-led NDA. Diverse parties with national and regional aspirations coming together before the all-important elections had a telling effect on the overall outcome of the results. Even though the NDA did gain the majority to form the Union Government for the third successive time, the BJP failing to cross the majority mark on its own was considered a definite setback. However, the stunning win in Haryana, comprehensive win in Maharashtra, and stupendous performance in Delhi must have warmed the cockles of the BJP and the NDA in no small measure. Where does this leave the teetering INDI alliance though?

- The friction between the opposition political parties has been surfacing over the last year or so since the BJP’s juggernaut was not halted on desired lines. West Bengal’s TMC supremo Mamta Banerjee has been vocal about leading the INDI alliance thereby questioning the Congress’ disposition as the first amongst equals. Murmurs in Maharashtra Maha Vikas Aghadi are growing by the day and the defeat in the assembly polls must have felt like a body blow to the opposition’s efforts to tame the Mahayuti alliance led by the BJP. Now the latest setback with the AAP getting routed by the BJP’s stunning victory margin would have further diminished the opposition morale. AAP and Congress going full throttle against each other helped the BJP’s cause in the Delhi polls.

Note that the INDI alliance is found unable to forge a strong unity between themselves by forming a common ground to corner the BJP and/or succeed in winning over the electorate with a plausible narrative. The moot point to ponder over here is whether the experimentation of opposition parties has run its course since the alliance is consistently failing to stop the BJP’s forward march. The answer must be a resounding yes. Where does this leave the opposition’s unity even as the saffron brigade appears increasingly assured in taming the challenges adroitly? Prima facie, the BJP is going from strength to strength with the latest nail on the opposition’s coffin coming in the form of AAP’s complete decimation in Delhi. What is next for AAP? Going back to the drawing board.
