  • People closely following the fortunes of Indian cricket would notice how the game has metamorphosed into such a big money-spinning venture in the last two decades or so. Especially with the advent of the shortest format of the game the Indian Premier League T20 cricket taking centerstage, the amount of money being pumped into the game has completely altered the face of the sport. Of course, India is the largest money spinner for cricket is stating the obvious. The sheer size of the country and the extreme popularity of sport ensure that big money coming in is not an aberration. Make no mistake, the franchise-based IPL T20 cricket has become one of the most lucrative sporting events in the world.

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India is happy since 70% of the revenue for the sport is generated from India. The Indian cricketers from across the country are making a beeline for the sport with renewed vigour knowing fully well that even a couple of years of IPL contract would be enough to settle in life. Here, the credit should accrue to the BCCI for taking the sport to every nook and corner of the country. The cricketing infrastructure is rightly getting attention that only facilitates more budding youngsters to take up the sport. Parents hitherto worried about the future of their children no longer insist on completing their education but would willingly support in providing adequate cricket coaching hoping to break into the big league sooner than later.

  • Some of the most exciting talents have emerged in the Indian cricketing scenario in the last few years propelling such cricketers to even represent Team India in the highest format like the Tests. The moot point to ponder over here is whether too early fame and money have spoiled the longevity expectations of talented cricketers unable to cope with the accompanying pressure to perform optimally. Mind you, breaking into any franchisee in the T20 format itself is not a mean task. To sustain expectations, the demands on the cricketers to excel continuously in overcoming challenges on the ground physically as well as mentally are manifolds. Why then are some of the promising cricketers repeatedly failing to live up to expectations?

  • Is too much money coming into the hands early? Are these cricketers unable to handle the attention that comes along? Is it because of the arrogance that seeps into the psyche compelling the precocious talents to go haywire? Is the support system in the form of family, friends, and coaching staff inadequate to keep these talents grounded? Many questions could be rightly asked as to why talented cricketers are repeatedly failing to move up the ladder but simply fade away after a brief stint of glory and basking in the sun. The BCCI should initiate measures to educate talented cricketers by setting up regular orientations, workshops, coaching, and counselling, and provide support to keep them grounded. Money is a byproduct, but talent should not go to waste.
