- People calling the garden city of India their homes would be ruing the despicable state of roads of Bengaluru vociferously in desperation and with a resigned look to boot. Reams and reams have been written about the sheer apathy of the civic agencies tasked to ensure that basic amenities like commutable roads are made available for common citizens. However, continued negligence and passing on the buck to different civic agencies have become the norm. The incumbent government that was overwhelmingly elected in the last state assembly elections has conveniently looked away from satisfactorily addressing the grave concerns. Remember, the Congress government was elected because it assures a clean administration.

- Yes, the previous BJP government was alleged to have indulged in corruption in every sphere of administration. Thus, people chose Congress to deliver an able, clean, and people-friendly government. The five guarantees promised during the campaigning played a great role in convincing the electorate to choose Congress. However, the promise of providing able governance also swayed the electorate’s opinion. The moot point to ponder over is what is the use of laying out a red carpet inviting investors from around the country and the world but grossly unprepared to provision basic amenities like commutable roads? The citizens are sick of being taken for a royal ride where promises and assurances continue to remain on paper and lips.

- One fails to understand how civic agencies fail to anticipate simple monsoon season vagaries and the accompanying challenges. Frustratingly, year after year, people are forced to face the unresponsive civic agencies failing to ensure their difficulties are largely mitigated. Choked storm water drains, uncleared waste and garbage, and most importantly, pothole-filled roads that are not even fit enough to walk let alone ride and/or drive on these wretched stretches. The standard refrain originating from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) sounds so routine and nonchalant that the citizens are bound to feel deeply frustrated. Some of the newly opened flyovers developing potholes starkly mirror poor workmanship from the executing agencies.

- I am sure most of the Bengalureans would be wondering how despite roads being laid, re-laid, filled up, and freshly tarred develop potholes no sooner the monsoon rains start pounding. Where is the accountability for rendering the roads as deathtraps claiming innocent lives attempting to maneuver craters? A mere lip service bemoaning the death, a cursory statement about booking the responsible civic agency official for failing to discharge responsibilities, blacklisting the contractor for poor execution of works, and handing over compensation to the bereaved family is what we witness every time. The reputation of Bengaluru has taken a severe beating because of the apathy shown by the government agencies. Can it be addressed satisfactorily?
