- People seriously invested in the political happenings around the world would be watching with varied emotions like dismay, intrigue, surprise, cynicism, and resigned know-it feelings about what’s happening in the presidential polls of the most advanced country in the universe. The political churning witnessed in the USA has all the ingredients to be equated with a racy storyline and edge-of-the-seat narrative of a crime thriller where two geriatric politicians representing two opposing parties were squared off against each other. We Indians were convinced it’s only in India that we get to see such an unpredictable but juicy narrative emanating from the equally fascinating political class known to throw up dramatic occurrences with consummate nonchalance.

- The incumbent Joe Biden versus the contender and ex-president Donald Trump had the entire global community glued. How an American president has played out a classical tragedy, palace coup included must have further intrigued the global community. Note that every tragedy falls into two paths, a complication is followed by an unraveling or a denouement. The 46th American president is living this now. The Biden-Trump debate was watched by 51mn Americans on TV alone. We must agree that it was a disaster for Biden. In Biden’s telling, he just had a bad night. For too many others though, it meant that he would for sure have a super bad election day. And it isn’t just Americans who have been weighing in on the matter.
- Mind you, this election is no less consequential for the entire world. Also, it is theatrically riveting. Naturally, global interest has only intensified after the failed assassination of Trump. So, when Biden stepped down from his re-election bid this weekend, the denouement of the political crisis triggered by his debate performance, it sure vibed like a classical tragedy. Of course, Biden was brought down by nothing but biological dynamics. Yes, a sitting American president dropping out of the race so late in the election cycle, is a historic and no less unprecedented offering for the party and the country. Republicans have a darker spin on his fate. That it is something like a palace coup. But talk of Biden being eased out has resonated among the Democrats supporters.

- Also, echoes of betrayal from well-known Democrats like Barrack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are reverberating too. Notably, the unfolding events of the past few days were riveting because Biden didn’t move toward conclusion meekly. He resisted for days and so did his loyalists. There was no better demonstration of this than his continuing to claim until hours before he quit the race, I’m the guy. Indeed, Biden has walked into what he and his cohort see as early, unwanted, and unwarranted retirement contrasting critics who reckon he left it too late for comfort. Who said the most powerful nation in the world had to grapple with a leadership tussle resulting in one bowing out tragically? Undoubtedly, Biden will be remembered as a bit of a tragic hero.
