1. Bombay to Mumbai
The financial capital of the country changed its name from Bombay to Mumbai in 1996. Although for Mumbaikars; Mumbai is just a name of the city and Bombay is a feeling!
2. Poona to Pune
Getting its name from punya giri; the Mumbai’s cousin city Poona changed its name to Pune in 1977.
3. Calcutta to Kolkata
Calcutta termed as the country’s culture hub changed its name to Kolkata in 2001. Kolkata is a shorter version of Kolikata!
4. Madras to Chennai
A colonial version of Madraspattinum, Madras became Chennai in the year 1996!
5. Trivandrum to Thiruvananthapuram
The city changed its name in 1991; however, most people use the old name Trivandrum for their convenience!
6. Trichinapoly to Tiruchirapalli
The city got its new name in 1971 and is lovingly called as Trichy. Its name is derived from three headed demon Trishira!
7. Cochin to Kochi
The port city got its name Kochi in 1996 and is still often called by it’s mainland name, Ernakulam!
8. Baroda to Vadodara
Baroda gets its new name from Vatpatrak and Vatodar; changed to Vadodara in 1974.
9. Pondicherry to Puducherry
Puducherry meaning ‘new town’ got the new name in 2006 and is also known as ‘Pondy’ in Tamil!
10. Indhur to Indore
The financial capital of Madhya Pradesh got its new name during the British rule. The city is named after its Indreshwar Temple!
11. Simla to Shimla
Right after the independence, the spelling of the capital city of Himachal Pradesh got changed. Simla becomes Shimla and is derived from Goddess Shyamala Devi.
12. Cawnpore to Kanpur
Within a year of independence, the city of Cawnpore got its new name Kanpur.
13. Panjim to Panaji
The capital city of Goa’s name changed to Panaji in 1960s; thus detaching itself from its Portugese name Panjim!
14. Jubbulpore to Jabalpur
Jabalpur is among the first cities which changed their names in 1947 itself! The city is known for its marble rock formations.
15. Calicut to Kozhikode
It is the city where Vasco De Gama stepped for the first time on the Indian soil. The city got its new name Kozhikode after the independence.
16. Banaras to Varanasi
Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi is also known as the holy city of Kashi and has regained its name in 1956. The name originated from two rivers; Varuna and Asi.
17. Gauhati to Guwahati
Gauhati’s spelling changed to Guwahati in the year 1980. It is the combination of the two Assamese word Guwa meaning ‘areca nut’ and Haat meaning ‘market’.
18. Mysore to Mysuru
Mysuru is known for its palaces and the delightful sweet Mysore Paak. The city got it’s name from Mahishasura or Mahishuru and changed it’s name in 2014.
19. Bangalore to Bengaluru
The IT hub of India, Bangalore changed its name to Benguluru. The city is often termed as the ‘city of guards’.
20. Waltair to Visakhapatnam
Often called Vizag, Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam adopted Vizagapatnam name shortly after independence. Later in 1987, it became Visakhapatnam and is the third largest city on the east coast!
