Rajasthan is known for their wealthy kings and their palaces. History says that Rajasthan was distributed in 20 states, each ruled by a King or Maharaja. Each of them built forts and palaces showcasing their culture and tradition. Here is a list of 10 famous palaces of Rajasthan that you must visit on your next trip.
1. City Palace, Jaipur: The City Palace lodged the sovereignty of the Maharaja of Jaipur who commanded the Kachwaha Rajput clan. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II started the construction of the city complex that spreads over several acres. The construction commenced in 1729 and it took three years to be completed. The palace complex was entirely built in 1732.
2. Hawa Mahal: It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Singh as a part of the City Palace. It was an extension of the women’s chamber with the purpose of letting royal ladies to witness day-to-day life in the lane below without being seen. It is five-storey high, constructed with red sandstone and has over 950 windows. Hawa Mahal was constructed in a way that the breeze circulates through these windows, hence, giving the palace its name.
3. City Palace, Udaipur: It is a palace in Udaipur. It was constructed over a period of nearly 400 years by numerous kings of the family, starting from Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of the Sisodia Rajput clan in 1559. It is situated on the east bank of the Lake Pichola.
4. Jal Mahal: Jal Mahal, which means ‘Water Palace’ is situated in the centre of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The lake and the palace and were reconditioned and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.
5. Umaid Bhavan Palace: The foundation of this palace was laid down by Maharaja Umaid Singh, in the year 1929 and it took 16 years for the construction to complete. It is believed that approximately 5000 men were hired to complete the construction of the palace. After the construction was complete, it was considered to be the largest private residence in the world comprising of 347 rooms.
6. Lake Palace: Lake Palace, Udaipur was built by Maharana Jai Singh II in 1746. It is considered to be one of the most romantic places in the world and in the recent years it has been transformed into a hotel which has been managed by the Taj Group.
7. Rambagh Palace: Rambagh Palace Jaipur was the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. It was constructed in 1835 for the wet nurse of prince Ram Singh II.
8. Lallgarh Palace: It is located in Bikaner, Rajasthan and was erected for Sir Ganga Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner, between 1902 and 1926. The building was designed by the famous British architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob.
9. Deeg Palace: This palace was built in 1772 as a summer resort for the kings of Bharatpur State in Rajasthan. It is 30 Kilometres outside the city of Bharatpur.
10. Jaswant Thada: It was constructed in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in the memory of his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh. The tomb is built out of complicatedly carved pieces of marble. These pieces are very thin and refined, so that they produce a warm radiance when illuminated by the sun.
