- People closely following the fortunes of political developments in the state of Karnataka must have noticed with great intrigue, concern, and increasing cynicism how the Congress party, having assumed power with such a brute majority, was pulling in different directions over heading the government. Ever since the Congress came to power after winning the state assembly elections with a thumping majority, largely aided by the five guarantee schemes that impressed the electorate, the talks have been confined to the supposed power-sharing arrangement between the two stalwart leaders, viz. Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. It was plainly visible how the two factions supporting the leaders kept the issue of power sharing on the burner perpetually.

- Thankfully, the drama surrounding the power sharing was resolved by the Congress high command, leading to the coronation of Shivakumar into the saddle of Chief Ministership vacated by Siddaramaiah. Of course, we knew that such an arrangement was indeed in place, since the organizational prowess, heft, traction, and reach enjoyed by Shivakumar were no longer a secret, but rather confirmation of the hard work put in by the resilient leader whose uncamouflaged ambition to lead the government never subsided. Eventually, the party’s top leadership decided to initiate the change by asking the veteran leader to step aside and allow Shivakumar to lead the government. The incumbent has completed one month; what have been the visible changes?

- One of the most visible changes from the previous administration was noticed right from the day of the swearing-in ceremony. As we know by now, Shivakumar openly embraces Hindutva, and the optics reaffirming the same are clearly noticeable. Religious heads representing various faiths/beliefs/religion/caste were invited for the oath-taking ceremony. The Congress has unsuccessfully attempted to embrace soft Hindutva but was ridiculed by hardliners for calling such efforts half-baked. And the minority appeasement was always brandished by the opposition simply because the Congress’ vote bank is made up of them. Shivakumar completely dispelled such a notion by inviting all religious heads for the ceremony. That was a big noticeable shift.

- Now that a month has passed since the new government assumed office, what are the palpable changes and/or moves ahead noticed for the general good of the citizens? Undoubtedly, a month’s time is very little for any administration to usher in any changes, let alone welfare measures. The five guarantee schemes will continue, but the government has announced that only the deserving and rightful will enjoy the same. The incumbent is known as a go-getter and as such, his penchant for ensuring the completion of developmental projects will be in focus. Yes, he had to battle some of the ministers’ unhappiness in the allotted portfolios, but all that was smoothly handled. Now, the citizens will look forward to witnessing some worthwhile changes in the coming months.
