  • Indian citizens are patience personified, remarkably resilient, amazingly entrepreneurial, fascinatingly ingenious, and perpetually bubbling with indigenous ideas to surprise themselves as well as the global community through sheer measures amid incredible challenge is stating the obvious. However, it is worth reiterating that an increasingly aspirational society unabashedly wishes to not settle for anything less than the best is also very well known. As an independent country, India has traversed several upheavals, obstacles, and difficult times on the back of centuries of invasions/conquests from foreign nations is an inspirational story worthy of soaking in repeatedly. We have shown enough gumption and wherewithal to sustain time and again.

  • Due credit should accrue to successive governments, both at the Centre and the States, for ushering in much-needed developments across the vast swathe of the landscape, duly aided by the inherently entrepreneurial streak running within us. So far so good. The moot point to ponder over here is whether the developments originally envisaged have resulted in fruition to the desired standards on the ground. The answer must be in the negative. In present times, no less than the Prime Minister has never let go of an opportunity to reiterate how India is poised to join the ranks of the most advanced nations by the year 2047. Unfortunately, starkly mirroring our skewed priorities vis-à-vis underwhelming thrust towards sprucing up education infrastructure, we are still scratching the surface in positioning this critical sector that would pave the way for the overall growth of the country in due course of time. Public sector education is pathetic at best, which sums up how we have grossly neglected the area over the decades.

  • The government-run schools, colleges, and universities – save for a few elite higher educational institutions – are crying for basic amenities, viz,. proper classrooms, trained teachers, amenities, tools, aids, playgrounds, and a welcoming environment fostering joyful learning are sorely lacking. Little wonder that private-sector education has steadily established an unmissable presence across the length and breadth of the country. The need of the hour is to ensure our elected representatives and the bureaucracy walk the talk while devoting everything under their purview to strengthening the public education infrastructure. Schools without necessities like clean drinking water and toilets in this age of advancement are anachronistic and simply unacceptable.
