1) China

China is considered to be one of the oldest and was previously a part of the Qing Empire. It has a long list of dynasties which had ruled over it and can be clearly traced today. Though Wikipedia suggests that Iran is elder than china stating the Proto-Elamite kingdom which was on the Iranian Plateau in around 3,200 BC was the beginning of that nation. It got its sovereignty on 12th February 1912 and was previously governed by Qing Empire.

2) Switzerland

Switzerland is the second nation to make the list, it undoubtedly deserves recognition as it has maintained its important form for more than an 800 years. Because of its geographical features it was highly impractical to have a uniform cultural nation until it had adopted its current constitution which was in 1848. From the time of the establishment of Confederatio Helvetica its border has been pretty consistent this was actually an alliance among its constituent cantons which was formed in 1291. The Latin adjective which is used in that name is the term that the Romans had used for the precursors of the Swiss people.

3) Japan

Japan has often claimed to be the oldest country in the universe, Emperor Jimmu had established the country in 660 BCE, the imperial house of Japan claims its descent from Jimmu while many of the modern historians believe that there is very little provable evidence of his reign. Some historians believe that Emperor Kimmei who is the twenty ninth emperor of Japan is the actual first emperor as because there are provable and verifiable evidences. If traditional stories are to be believed, then Jimmu was the descendent of sun goddess Amatetasu. He was born on 13th February in around 711 BCE and died on 11th march 585BCE.

4) India

India is the 4th nation to make it to the list. Bharat is India’s local name which has been derived from the scriptural Bharata, which was held by tradition as the first emperor who united India in 2000 BC. Political unity was initially achieved by Chandragupta Maurya who had founded the Mauryan empire in 322BC while the Modern Indian subcontinent was united by Mahajanapadas in around 600BC. After the Mauryan empire, Gupta Empire ruled the nation at about 320AD followed by the Maratha Empire in 1674 before the dawn of Mughals and then British from 1857 to its Independence in 1947.

5) Bulgaria

It is believed that in 681 BC Aspruh Khan had won the battle for the land on the Balkan peninsula and had established the second Bulgarian Kingdom. He came from Grate Bulgaria which was destroyed by the Barbarians. The calender, Ancient Bulgarian of the nation is one of the eldest and accurate calendar in the world and has been recognized by UNESCO in 2006.

6) San Marino

San Marino is a small country situated in Europe with just 61square kilometers and ranks third after Monaco and Vatican. It is just about 1/3rd the size of Washington, D.C. It had adopted a written constitution in 1600 which is often credited as the world’s oldest written constitution, but it was not recognized as an individual country by the Pope until 1631.
