Of course, human emotions, frailties, fragilities, sensitivities, and perceptions surrounding our upbringing, irrespective of social strata, play an extremely defining role in eventually shaping us. As the elderly, wiser, and wisdom-filled individuals having experienced the rigmarole of life would state unambiguously, life is never easy, and every one of us must go through the grind/rigmarole. People who believe in the law of karma would unequivocally mention that whatever we sow, so shall we reap.

- Mind you, the law of karma states – good good, bad bad, and none escape karma – when we have the form, we are bound by the chain as well. Society always throws surprises perpetually and will continue to do so for eternity. This aspect will not change. Note that the advent of mobile phones and the proliferation of social media platforms have completely revolutionized how we go about leading our lives. People from all walks of life and ages have literally become hooked on social media, as is known all around. As such, the obsession with smartphones of all hues, including known brands, has reached fever pitch on the back of smart marketing/branding endeavours. So much so that even children are forcing their parents to buy them the latest handset.

However, what transpired recently when a family of three tragically perished over a smartphone in Maharashtra is not only gut-wrenching but also mirrors where society is headed vis-à-vis obsession over owning up material comfort despite not having the means to indulge in being spendthrift. A high-voltage drama unfolded on the hill. The death of the three members of the same family, with a dispute over an iPhone, could have been avoided. Apparently, the 18-year-old youth had reportedly purchased an iPhone but was unable to pay the EMI or was insisting on a new phone, due to which he had a dispute with his parents.

- In a tragic turn of events, the youth climbed the hilltop, threatening to take an extreme step. As emergency services and villagers tried to manage the situation, the teen and the father plunged from the cliff edge, prompting the devastated mother to follow suit. Looked from any angle, what a waste of three lives for an unfathomably silly reason. Is it really worthy to loose life over a smartphone? An entire family is wiped out just like that. Agreed, the present generation is exposed to all the modern amenities, and the parents are more than willing to accommodate every request. But allowing a child/teenager/adolescent to hold their parents to ransom over a smartphone simply magnifies the wrong undercurrents flowing in our society. What’s happening?
