- The global community must acknowledge that the voices of the present generation – we call them Gen Z and Gen Alpha – cannot be suppressed anymore and, as such, are expected to be heard with full intent and seriousness. The voices of a generation brought up on a steady diet of modernity-defined amenities must be heard with patience. We know how humanity and humankind have witnessed steady progress since time immemorial as one generation seamlessly makes way for another. For millennia, humankind has welcomed new water when old water tends to stagnate. That’s the beauty of humankind, driven by the unquestionable sway held by Mother Nature to regulate things.

- As the old saying goes, the old must make way for the new; the voices emanating from the present generation have been reverberating across the world forcefully and impactfully. Undeniably, several countries around the world must accommodate the increasingly aspirational generation demanding greater accountability, responsibility, and opportunities from the governments. India too witnessed the power of collective voices when the youth across the country rallied against the Union Government on the back of the NEET-UG fiasco, leading to paper leaks in the higher medical institutions conducting exams. We are aware of how the educated youth are frustrated with the lack of employment and job opportunities commensurate with their qualifications.

- How the agitation at the famed Jantar Mantar in New Delhi eventually led to the resignation of the then Union Education Minister and the subsequent measures initiated by the Centre is well known. It is apparent that the political parties, irrespective of affiliation/philosophy, are eyeing women and youth to consolidate vote banks. No government can ignore the voices and/or collective power of the youth is stating the obvious. Having been emboldened by how the vociferous and collective voices ensured the Centre acted on their demands, Gen Z is showing signs of aggressiveness laced with impatience on matters related to administration/governance. Agreed, the freedom of speech and expression allows us to raise valid questions. There is a thin line between valid demands and illogical ones.
PC: GujaratSamachar English - However, what should not be overlooked is the way we conduct ourselves in a civilized and democratic manner. The imperative civility, pleasant disposition, welcoming demeanor, and gentle exchange of views are a hallmark of any civilized society. India is a richly endowed country with a rich history/legacy/heritage that has stood the test of time. We are admired for showing the way in how respectfully we conduct ourselves during interactions. Conversely, if the present generation simply embraces uncouth behaviour, a sense of entitlement, intransigence, and overtly aggressive intent bordering on condescension as a matter of right, it only creates an unpleasant situation for everyone. Let’s not forego civility for sharing our point of view.
