We often accuse migrants for stealing jobs from the locals in a country to which they were forced to relocate, but now they are not the real threat to employment. But robots who will likely automate 50 percent of the global workforce by the year 2045.
Computer Scientists Warn, we are likely to lose our jobs to Robots
We all have imagined the future to be a glorious place, with some robot butlers cater to our every need and makes our life much easier. But that is certainly not the true, the real picture can be much bleaker.
This shocking report with new stats was announced during Sunday’s annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held in Washington.
According to top computer scientists in the United States, the rise of Artificial Intelligence and robots in the work place could cause mass unemployment and dislocated economies. They have warned that it’s not as rosy as we imagined, it’s not going to be simply unlocking productivity gains and freeing us all up to watch TV and play sports. But it can actually leave us jobless, we are likely to lose our job to robots.
Rise of Robots and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the work place is almost Inevitable
The world is soon approaching to the time when machines will be able to outperform humans at almost any task. The society needs to challenge this question before it is upon then: What will the humans do, if the machines become capable of performing all the work humans can do. We all might have a typical answer, which is- we will be free to enjoy and pursue leisure activities. But, is life all about enjoyment? According to professor Moshi Vardi who is a computer science professor at the Rice University, the jobs which fall at the middle of the skills curve are at highest risk.
• Low End Jobs will suffer, but will automation help?
Data entry clerks, hotel clerks, and people working in delivery or shipping are likely to suffer. Taxi and Truck drivers will also be replaced by the self- driving cars which are into rapid development. This leaves the taxi and truck drivers worrying about their long-term future. But in such jobs where wages paid are very low, will automation be a good idea as this might be much costlier.
The aircraft maker Airbus announced this week the launch of a program to develop humanoid robotics technology, this technology will be able to perform manufacturing tasks in its factories. According to the company, the robotic workers would help increase the production levels rather than replacing workers.
Effect of Automation across the Globe
This is a shift which has been happening since the start of the Industrial Age. Currently automation displaces less than 40 percent of global employment. But by 2045 this will rise to 50 percent, which means half of the global workforce will be replaced by robots.
According to reports which was released last month from the Oxford Martin School, it was estimated that around 57 percent of the jobs were susceptible to automations deviated greatly across the globe.
Though the US and UK are below the average with 47 and 35 percent respectively. The developing nations like Ethiopia and Thailand have a higher rate with 85 and 72 percent respectively. And China is estimated to have 77 percent of its jobs susceptible to automation.
Particularly talking about the US, the percentage of jobs at risk differs across the country. Cities like Boston and Washington have the lowermost rate of 38 percent, as compared to Las Vegas and Fresno with 40 and 54 percent respectively.

For better or for worse, machines are indeed replacing humans and further replicating what we thought were uniquely human skills. This is happening at a much faster rate than many of us thought. But this recent study has definitely put our minds in question, what will be the possible effect of this human invention on the humans indeed.
